Surf’s Up At The Mars Hotel

Blame it on “Pulp Fiction” or blame it on the new wave of surf bands, but surf music is riding a wave of revival.

It’s in movies, on TV commercials and selling strongly in record stores across the country.

Four Piece Suit, a surf-jazz instrumental combo, will drop in, shoot the curl and hang 10 at the Mars Hotel tonight.

The Massachusetts quartet isn’t a strict surf band. Nor is it a straight jazz band. Yet, the merging of both exotic genres, a splash of cocktail music and a couple of styles, make for a splendid ride, especially since the surf genre alone can be so limiting.

On Four Piece Suit’s debut album, “Ready to Wear,” the band weaves together a handful of originals and several covers, which include Henry Mancini’s “Shot in the Dark,” John Barry’s “Human Jungle” and Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My.”

The band’s treatment of “Kolme Kitaraa” and “Walter and Conny” are exceptional.

“Ready to Wear” is quite a departure from anything the members of Four Piece Suit have done. All four play in an R&B band called Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.
