Hampton Jazz Festival Winners Announced

Following is a list of the area’s winners at the recent Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held at the University of Idaho:

Vocal Day winners for last Friday include: Lewis and Clark High School, directed by Kathleen Blair, combo winner.

The AAAA winner was Mead High School, directed by David Teal. Mead was also a runner-up for the non-mixed and combo categories.

Pullman High School, directed by Dan Bruce, was the A category winner

Local Instrumental Day winners for Feb. 24 were as follows:

Director Clarence Acox’s Garfield High School won the outstanding overall festival ensemble category. Garfield also captured the outstanding AAAA/AAA ensemble category and was the AAAA (I) winner. Stephen Swanson won the outstanding bassist award, while Chris Patin was designated the outstanding percussionist.

Kari Harris won for outstanding trombonist, solo division; Anne Drummond was outstanding pianist, solo division; and Jamahl Wilkins was the outstanding drummer, solo division. All are Garfield students.

Mead High School, directed by Scott Jones, was the designated AAAA (II) winner and the AAAA/ AAA combo runner-up. University High School, directed by Keith Nielsen, was the AAA runner-up.

Directed by Terry Lack, Cheney High School was the AA winner. Cheney Middle School, also directed by Lack, was the middle school runner-up.

Riverside High School, directed by Wes Sanborn, and Lakeside High School, directed by Karl Mote, were both runners-up in the A category.

Director Reid Smith and Mead Junior High were the junior high runners-up.
