Norman Holds Off Challengers With Sensational Short Game

Greg Norman used a sensational short game Sunday to hold off a determined challenge by Michael Bradley and a dogged effort by Vijay Singh to win the DoralRyder Open in Miami, by two strokes.

Needing only 11 putts on the back nine, where he shot a 32, and never going more than one hole without a birdie after No. 6, Norman closed with a 66 for a 19-under-par 269.

Bradley also shot a 66 and had the lead for a few brief moments after making birdies on No. 12 and 13, but Norman made birdies of his own on Nos. 14, 16 and 17 to turn back Bradley’s challenge.

Singh stayed with the Australian until Norman buried everyone on the back nine.

In Ojai, Calif., Walter Morgan made his 8-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, then Gary Player missed his try from 6 feet to give Morgan the victory in the seniors’ Healthcare Classic.

Morgan shot a 4-under-par 66 and Player a 68 to stand at 199, 11-under at the end of regulation play.

Both Morgan and Player birdied the par-5, 487-yard No. 18 to set up the playoff, which took them back to the 18th tee.
