Four Spokane Chiefs Members Finalists For Whl Annual Awards

Four members of the Spokane Chiefs are finalists for Western Hockey League annual awards.

Goaltender David Lemanowicz is a co-finalist for the Del Wilson Trophy that goes to the league’s top goaltender. Chad Mercier of the Regina Pats is the other finalists.

Mike Babcock of Spokane and Bob Lowes of the Brandon Wheats Kings are up for coach of the year. Lowes’ team leads the WHL East despite a rash of injuries. Babcock’s club leads the West after being picked in September to wind up no higher than fourth.

The Lloyd Saunders Trophy for executive of the year will go to Doug Mosher of the Swift Current Broncos or Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz.

For the second straight year, Dave Pier of Spokane is up for the league’s public relations/marketing award. The other finalist is Scott Clark of Regina.

Prep bowling

The 33rd annual state high school bowling championships are scheduled for Sports Page Lanes, 12828 E. Sprague, this weekend.

The tournament, featuring 24 boys teams and 14 girls teams, begins at 1 p.m. Saturday. The final four games, useing a head-to-head, postion-round format, are scheduled Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Cascade boys and Decatur girls are defending champions. Spokane entries include Central Valley and Mead boys and Shadle Park girls.

Admission is free. The tournament will be held in an entirely smoke-free environment.
