Tina Thompson scored 24 points while Erica Mashia had 21, including a late 3-pointer, to lead Southern California to an 87-81 Pacific-10 Conference victory over Washington State on Friel Court in Pullman.

Jenni Ruff and Kristin Erickson combined for 53 points to lead the Cougars (16-12 overall, 8-9 Pac-10). Ruff, who was also the leading rebounder with 12, became the leading single-season scorer in WSU history. Her 650 points this season breaks the 633 scored by Mead High School coach Jeanne Helfer in 1981.

Adrain Williams added 16 points for the Trojans (13-13, 8-9), all in the second half.

The Cougars led 75-73 after Laura Wilder’s layup with just less than 5 minutes left. But Mashia answered with a jumper for USC, and Kristin Clark stole the ensuing WSU inbounds pass, finding Mashia for a 3-pointer that gave the Trojans the lead for good.

“That was the key play in the game,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said of Clark’s steal and Mashia’s 3. “We never got the lead back from that point on.”
