Snowmobilers Claim Record For 24-Hour Run

Associated Press

Two Island Park men claimed a world record for miles logged on a snowmobile in 24 hours after finishing with 912 miles each on Fremont County trails.

That was less than their goal of 1,000 miles, but well above the previous record of 669 miles set in Minnesota last year.

An hour after completing the run Wednesday, Randy Gravatt said he was “hurtin’ for certain.”

“I think my butt hurts the most,” he said.

His partner, Joe Williams, had already hit the bars.

Gravatt and Williams, snowmobile shop employees at Sawtelle Mountain Resort, each rode the distance and hope to share the record once the “Guinness Book of World Records” verifies the witness log and affidavits from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department.

They started in a blizzard at 2 p.m. Tuesday, but had clear skies with a full moon by nightfall. The only problems were a broken rear suspension that took 20 minutes to repair and a moose standing on the trail that delayed them for 5 minutes.

Gravatt said it was tougher than expected, especially with the poor visibility early on and soft snow later.
