Tides Roll As Reserve Fires Away Aa Boys

Reserve guard Matt Gardner sank 5 of 8 3-pointers Saturday as Gig Harbor rolled to a 60-45 win over West Valley of Yakima in the State AA boys basketball championship game at the Tacoma Dome.

The Tides never trailed, zipping from a 6-0 lead to advantages of 15-2 after one quarter, 31-16 at halftime and 43-29 after three quarters.

Gardner scored 17 as the Tides (25-2) won their first state title on 50-percent shooting from the floor while holding WV (25-3) to 28 percent. The highest Gig Harbor had finished was third place in 1984.

The second-place finish was the highest for the Rams, who entered the contest with a 20-game win streak.

WV’s Bryan McLaughlin scored 17.

Douglas Wrenn, reserve Shane Makanani and Kerry McDonnell combined for 64 points as the top-ranked Irish (26-3) beat the Lions (19-8) in the game for third and sixth places.

Wrenn scored 23, Makanani 21 and McDonnell 20 as O’Dea led from midway through the first quarter.

Treven VanderPloeg scored 15 for Lynden, which opened the tourney with a 49-39 win over Cheney.

Jerome Toby’s basket with 2 seconds left gave the Golden Eagles (21-6) a win over the Cougars (22-3) in the game to settle fourth and seventh places.

Capital tied the game at 43 on Josh Partlow’s basket with 3:35 to go.

Ferndale’s Wade Vandenhaak scored 13.

David Emslie scored 17 as the Panthers (24-7) beat the Beavers (21-9) to decide fifth and eighth places.

Seattle Prep took the lead for good, at 11-10, on Brandon Bede’s basket 2:10 into the game. Ballard never came closer than five points - 33-28 early in the third period - in the second half against a zone defense.
