Fill-In Snow Melts Mavs With 13 Assists For Sonics

Associated Press

Sam Perkins scored a season-high 26 points and rookie Eric Snow had 13 assists in his first start Friday as the Seattle SuperSonics rolled to a 120-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Shawn Kemp had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Hersey Hawkins had 20 points, including 10 in a 12-0 fourth-quarter run when the Sonics broke open the game. Reserve David Wingate added a season-high 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting.

Snow replaced Gary Payton, who was serving a one-game suspension for a head-butting incident Wednesday against Orlando. The 6-foot-3 guard had five rebounds and five points in 33 minutes.

George McCloud led the Mavericks, who lost their sixth straight, with 30 points.

Tony Dumas’ basket pulled the Mavs within nine points, 86-77 with 9:12 left.

Hawkins then hit two 3-pointers and a layup and stole the ball to feed Wingate for another basket. After forcing another turnover, Hawkins scored on a layup for a 98-79 lead.

Sonics notes

Payton had his consecutive game streak snapped at 354, sixth longest in the NBA. He sat out the game because of a one-game suspension for head-butting Orlando’s Joe Wolf… . Vincent Askew was placed on the injured list. He strained a groin muscle late in the game against Orlando… . Nate McMillan returned to the active list after missing five games because of a strained patella tendon in his right knee.
