Boy With Meningitis Has Hands Removed

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Weippe boy who earlier lost his legs to bacterial meningitis had both his hands removed because of the disease.

Andy Moore, 15, went into surgery at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center about 10 a.m., Friday, said his father, Terry Moore. The doctors removed both hands and wrists, he said.

“He’s not out of the woods yet. He’s a long ways from it,” Moore said.

Andy Moore will have to go through more surgery next Friday.

He was stricken with meningococcal meningitis Feb. 23. He has not been home from the hospital since.

The 19-year-old University of Idaho student also stricken with the same disease Feb. 25 went through surgery Tuesday. Erin Nielson had both her legs removed at University Hospital in Salt Lake City. xxxx
