Stowaways Found Dead In Freighter

Compiled From Wire Services

Three stowaways were found dead in a cargo hold full of cocoa beans Tuesday when a ship docked in Brooklyn, officials said.

One other stowaway was discovered by crew members on the deck of the freighter during the voyage and was being cared for by the ship’s crew. He was determined Tuesday to be in good health, officials said.

Autopsies will be performed today , said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman with the New York City Medical Examiner’s office. A law enforcement source said the men may have been poisoned as a result of fumigation during the voyage.
