Boundary County School Levy Narrowly Rejected

In Boundary County, voters narrowly rejected a $528,211 maintenance and operation levy.

Residents cast 832 votes against the measure and 811 for it. The levy needed only a simple majority to pass.

The district plans to run the levy again. Trustees have called an emergency meeting for later this week to set a date for another vote.

The levy is needed to maintain the current level of services and programs for students. The district had been supplementing operations with federal forest funds. But last year the district decided to use its allocation of timber dollars to buy new school equipment and repair dilapidated schools.

“To operate schools and programs at the same level as the current year, the levy is needed,” said Superintendent John Schwartz.
