Foreman Wins On Every Card Morrison Victor In First Round Of His Bout

Associated Press

George Foreman defeated Crawford Grimsley on Sunday, winning a unanimous decision in their 12-round heavyweight fight.

At stake was the IBU title, not considered one of the major boxing championships.

Neither fighter was able to land any decisive punches. Only in the final round did they manage to exchange a flurry of blows. Both were bleeding at the end of the bout.

For much of the fight, Foreman kept Grimsley away with left jabs, apparently waiting for a chance to deliver one heavy punch that never came.

Foreman, now 75-4, looked somewhat flabby around the waist and was slow and heavy on his feet. But otherwise he showed few signs of his 47 years, remaining standing in his corner between rounds.

The two boxers fought amid rows of empty seats for a match which received minimal publicity. Only the fringe WBU and IBA titles were at stake and Grimsley, who fell to 20-1, was little known. But the crowd was clearly cheering for Foreman in his first fight in 18 months, often gasping when he landed solid blows to Grimsley’s head and body.

Foreman had been stripped of the WBA and IBF titles because he failed to fight certain opponents.

HIV-infected boxer Tommy Morrison made quick and easy work of last-minute opponent Marcus Rhode with a knockout a mere 1 minute, 38 seconds into the first round of a bloodless fight.

The bout marked former heavyweight champion Morrison’s first time in the ring since announcing he had contracted the AIDS-causing virus.

The match was on the undercard to the match between Foreman and Grimsley.
