Moyer’s Deal With Mariners For Two Years, $3.7 Million

Associated Press

Left-hander Jamie Moyer and the Seattle Mariners agreed Wednesday to a $3.7 million, two-year contract.

Moyer gets a $200,000 signing bonus, a $1.6 million salary next season and $1.9 million in 1998. The Mariners have the option for 1999 at $2.3 million.

The deal is contingent on Moyer passing a physical.

Moyer, who turns 34 Monday, was acquired by the Mariners from the Boston Red Sox on July 30 for outfielder Darren Bragg. Moyer made 11 starts for Seattle last season and went 6-2 with a 3.31 earned run average.

Signing Moyer gives Seattle a starting rotation that will probably include left-handers Randy Johnson, Jeff Fassero and Stirling Hitchcock, and a right-hander, probably Salomon Torres or Bob Wolcott.

Signing Moyer means the Mariners no longer will pursue Terry Mulholland. The left-handed starter was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies in July and had a 5-4 record and a 4.67 ERA in 12 starts with Seattle.
