The Mountain Is Big And So Are The Savings

Act now if you want to ski on the cheap at Big Mountain near Whitefish, Mont. The resort will sell pre-season vouchers for $23 only through Wednesday.

The vouchers can be used any day between Nov. 28 and April 6 and are transferable. Just present the voucher at the ticket window for an adult lift ticket (multiple vouchers can be redeemed for multiple-day lift tickets). The full price for adult one-day lift tickets is $38 so the vouchers save $15.

For information about buying vouchers, call (406) 862-2900 or 862-2915.

No hovels here: A gingerbread village goes on display Nov. 25 in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel in Seattle and there will be no shortage of architectural details on these homes.

The gingerbread houses will be created by teams of Seattle architects and the culinary staff of the hotel and it’s all for a good cause. The houses will be sold and the proceeds go to the Greater Seattle chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The project has raised $33,000 in the past three years.

The village will be on display until Dec. 26.

Save some bucks: Those heading to Seattle for some holiday shopping can check out the Seattle Super Saver Package. This year - the sixth for this program - there are 25 downtown Seattle hotels participating and the package includes savings on visitor attractions, shopping and dining. To take advantage of the program, travelers must make reservations directly through one of the participating hotels or through the Seattle Super Saver reservation line. Rates are valid Nov. 25 through March 31. For information and a list of participating hotels: (800) 535-7071.

On the Web: The Emerald City has set up a home page with plenty of information on the history, neighborhoods, weather and major events in Seattle. There’s also lodging info on the page. The Web address: http://222.SeeSeattle.org

Attention parade goers: The annual Christmas parade in Omak has been moved this year to Dec. 7 to avoid a potential conflict with high school football playoffs.

Should the Omak football team advance in the playoffs, the band would accompany the team out of town, which officials say would “musically impair the parade.”

The parade lineup on Dec. 7 is at 9:30 a.m. and the marching begins at 10 a.m. For details: (800) 225-6625.

Even more lights: It’s not as though Grand Coulee Dam has been dark all these months but the dam and the town were officially lighted for the holidays Friday. The lighting fest, which continues through December, includes displays of toy bears, a jack in the box, leaping deer and a train.

A winter cruise: Money-saving “Quiet Season” packages are being offered by the Victoria Clipper on its cruises to the San Juan Islands, 70 miles north of Seattle. The rates run through April 30.

The package includes transportation to and from the islands, a champagne breakfast en route and one night’s lodgings at either the Inn at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island or at Rosario Resort on Orcas Island.

Prices vary. For info: (206) 448-5000.
