Vandals’ Quick Start Stops Global

The one sure way to win a basketball game: never trail.

Idaho’s men led from wire to wire and rode senior center Jason Jackman’s 26 points and 16 rebounds to a 87-76 exhibition win over Global Sports All-Stars, a team comprised of former college players, Saturday night at Memorial Gym.

This one was tied only at 0. Idaho sped in front with the first seven points and weathered every Global run.

“We’ve got a lot of new guys and there was some nerves playing for the first time, but it was encouraging to get a win,” UI coach Kermit Davis said. “We were able to play everybody.”

Global’s 76 points didn’t sit well with Davis, a defensive stickler. He called timeouts in each half after his defense took catnaps, allowing Global uncontested shots.

“We held them to 31 in the first half, which is pretty good,” Davis said. “In the second half, we didn’t get back a couple times, but they’ve got some guys that can make baskets.”

Idaho led 41-31 at half. Jackman had 12 points and 11 rebounds by intermission.

Carl Ray Harris (Fresno State) produced a bit of Global warming when he buried three 3-pointers in a 3-minute stretch, pulling the visitors within striking distance in the second half.

Idaho responded as Reggie Rose, Kevin Byrne and Eddie Turner combined for 14 points as the Vandals crept away at 69-61.

Global made one last run as former UC Irvine player Michael Tate hit a 3-pointer to narrow the margin to 73-68 with 4:50 left.

But just as they got close, the All-Stars left UI guard Kris Baumann unattended and he connected on a trey, igniting a clinching 12-0 spurt.

“It’s hard to gauge from these kinds of games, because you start trying to compare scores,” Davis said.

Turner had 13 points and Rose 11. Byrne, a sophomore transfer from North Idaho College, pitched in 10 points and nine boards.

Global, whose players at times bickered with their coach and even the fans, were led by Demetrius Calip’s 16 and Tate’s 14.

Idaho opens the regular season on the road versus Purdue next Sunday.
