Who needs coaches?

The second half of the Baltimore Ravens-Jacksonville Jaguars game began with members of the Baltimore coaching staff stuck in an elevator. They were attempting to return to their press box seats and didn’t make it until midway through the third quarter.

The Ravens scored a touchdown without the coaches watching, their only offensive touchdown of the game.

Not for long

Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes, often the subject of rumors of impending unemployment, is third among all active professional sports coaches in tenure with the same team.

Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly and Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy have been with their teams for 10 seasons. This is Fontes’ eighth season with Detroit. He is 67-67 overall.

Be on the lookout

Police were looking Sunday night for a white minivan which struck and killed a pedestrian following the Buffalo Bills’ game in Orchard Park, N.Y.

The accident took place at 5:19 p.m. EST as fans were leaving Rich Stadium following the Bills’ victory over the New York Jets.

A white male in his 40s was crossing Route 20 near the stadium and was hit by two cars in succession, The second vehicle drove off without stopping, he said.

The driver of the first vehicle, 53-year-old June E. Allen of Tonawanda, N.Y., was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

An Amtrak train ferrying New York Jets fans to Buffalo struck an abandoned car on the tracks just outside Albany. No one was injured.

Captain Comeback sidelined

Indianapolis quarterback Jim Harbaugh expects to be sidelined two to three weeks after suffering a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee in a 27-13 loss to New England.

Harbaugh didn’t return after being hit by Patriots free safety Willie Clay on a blitz with 1:29 gone in the third quarter with New England ahead 17-3. Clay appeared to have been blocked into the quarterback.

The pendulum swings

For the first time in five weeks, New England didn’t allow an opposing rusher 100 yards. … The Chiefs, who had given up a league-low average of 52.6 yards rushing and 12 points in their previous three games, yielded 350 total yards in the first three periods to the Chargers. … Buffalo hadn’t allowed a runner to gain 100 yards in eight straight games before Sunday. Jets running back Adrian Murrell got 103. … The Bears had scored only 28 points and allowed just 20 in their 11 first quarters. Against Detroit, each team put up 14 points in the opening period. … The 41 points were the most by Cincinnati since 1990. … San Francisco fumbled as many times against Washington as it had in the 11 previous games combined. The 49ers dropped the ball six times, but only lost one.

Staying away in droves

Only 20,107 attended the Oilers’ home game vs. Carolina, the second-smallest football crowd in the Astrodome… . Even though the Bengals are 4-1 under coach Bruce Coslet, a crowd of 44,868 was the second smallest of the season.
