Millwood Sign Puts Residents In The Know

John Miller Correspondent

Millwood maintenance director Cleve McCoul says he might eventually use the town’s new electronic readerboard to let folks know when town clerk Eva Colomb celebrates her 50th birthday.

Colomb good-naturedly countered that if he does, she would use the sign to announce McCoul’s funeral.

Birthdays and memorial services aside, the sign was erected June 26 just outside the town hall at Argonne and Frederick to let Millwood’s 1,700 residents know about such things as when they should move their cars in preparation for leaf or snow removal, to note civic celebrations, and generally to help keep people informed about important events in the community.

“We hope this will eliminate the number of telephone calls we receive regarding leaf pick-up,” Colomb said. After the city purchased leaf removal equipment several years ago, residents began flooding the town clerk’s office each fall with calls asking when their neighborhood would be swept, he said.

During discussions about the town budget last year, McCoul suggested such a sign as a remedy for switchboard overload.

So far, the $4,700 American Electronic sign has been used to inform residents of the completion of the community’s sewer project and to announce the Oct. 14 celebration of the completion of the Argonne underpass project. It will also be used to remind voters of election day.

“Even though we publish a newsletter four times a year,” said Colomb, “it’s just nice to be able to have another chance to remind people of what’s coming up.”
