Carlson Fuels Odessa Comeback

B-8 football

Since his days as a 5-year-old ballboy, Randy Carlson has watched one pass-happy quarterback after another move through Odessa.

Imagine Carlson’s surprise when pre-season publications said he would be the latest in line of fine Tigers QBs.

“Papers and magazines were saying I was the best in the state (among B-8 QBs), and I’m not big on that,” Carlson said Friday after rallying second-ranked Odessa (4-0, 1-0) to a 24-16 Northeast B-8 win over Inchelium (2-2, 1-1).

Carlson, a 6-foot-3 senior, completed 1 of 5 passes - for minus yardage - as Odessa fell behind 16-0 in the first half.

He finished 8 of 18 for 151 yards and one TD pass. Carlson also ran for one TD and threw two 2-point conversions.

Odessa scored its points in the final 8 minutes, 35 seconds.

“As soon as we scored on my (1-yard) sneak (at 8:35), I went to my linemen and said, ‘We’re going to win this thing,”’ Carlson said.

The winning score, with 34 seconds left, came when Hornets center Zack Trudell snapped the ball short to punter Rich Whitney near the Inchelium 5-yard line. Daniel Pitts snagged the loose ball and bulled into the end zone.

The Inchelium faithful, so hopeful for most of the temperate afternoon, soothed the players for competing so well despite obstacles. The Hornets played without starting quarterback J.D. Finley (injured knee) and leading tailback Casey Finley (broken hand).

Inchelium’s offense revolved around 195-pound fullback Galen Desautel, who rushed for 114 of his 177 yards in the first half.

Desautel, also a stalwart on defense, began to wear down when he limped off the field early in the fourth quarter. Although he returned, he and the other Hornets had begun to unravel.

Inchelium co-coach Rick Johnson said fatigue became the main factor because the Hornets relied on nine players. Johnson said one second-half TD might have sealed the win.

Instead, Odessa’s line bought time for Carlson, whose 64-yard TD strike to Sean Moon with 6:31 left tied the score.

“In the first half we weren’t picking up the blitz,” Carlson said. “Coach (Myron Kramer) told the line at half-time that if they didn’t start picking it up, he’d find someone who would.”

“We want to get behind Randy,” Kramer said. “This will give him some confidence.”
