Dna Helps Implicate Suspect In Rape Case

From Staff And Wire Reports

A man wanted in connection with a rape at an Everett day care more than five years ago has been arrested in Arizona with the help of DNA testing, authorities said.

An extradition hearing is expected today for Brian Eugene Breault, 28, of Bothell. He was arrested in the Kingman, Ariz., area late Friday, Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor John Crowley said Saturday.

He was being held as a fugitive in the Mohave County Jail and was being interviewed by Everett detectives, Crowley said.

Snohomish County authorities on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for Breault, charging him with entering an Everett day care early Feb. 20, 1991, and raping a young woman who was alone there.

Last May, a DNA sample from the scene was compared against new additions to a DNA databank, and a match occurred with Breault’s DNA pattern, authorities said. Breault’s pattern had been added to the databank when he was convicted of second-degree assault in 1993.

A second test of Breault’s DNA pattern, completed in late September, again showed a match with DNA recovered at the crime scene, Crowley said.

On July 18, Everett detectives got a warrant to obtain blood samples from Breault, who denied knowledge of the rape. Five days later he quit his job at a local restaurant and told acquaintances he was leaving the state. He ended up getting a job in Arizona as a truck driver.
