Offshore Quake Rattles Vancouver

From Staff And Wire Reports

A powerful offshore earthquake shook parts of Canada’s Vancouver Island on Sunday, but there were no reports of damage or injuries, the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 70 miles southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, on the north end of the island, and about 270 miles northwest of Seattle, said Paul Whitmore, a geophysicist at the center.

The quake happened at 1:13 p.m., Whitmore said.

He said no significant aftershocks were recorded, nor was there danger of a tsunami, an earthquake-caused sea wave.
