Texas Girl Undergoes Successful Surgery

Compiled From Wire Services

A 10-year-old girl underwent successful colon surgery Monday, ending a protracted court fight between Texas child welfare authorities and her parents who opposed the operation.

Rachel Stout was in good condition and resting comfortably following removal of her colon at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, doctors said. She is expected to recover fully.

Steve and Patricia Stout had fought the state of Texas since early September over her care before signing a consent form Sunday authorizing the surgery.

The Stouts had held out hope that alternative treatment could save Rachel’s life.
