Clinton Cares About Working Students

Reana Emery-Cloy North Central

Why vote for Bill Clinton? We need someone who will look out for us and our needs. I believe that someone is Bill Clinton.

As a working teen, I look forward to my paychecks. Then I grimace as I see up to 20 percent taken out for Social Security, Medicare and federal income tax. I realize I need to contribute my share to the economy and to taxes as an American citizen, but it’s hard not to be resentful when I see my money leaving my pocket.

President Clinton realized how hard it is to make money at low paying jobs, and he’s taking the necessary steps to improve our job market.

Along with vastly improving the economy, President Clinton recently signed a bill that raised the minimum wage 90 cents an hour over two years.

Teens will directly benefit from this raise. The minimum wage and low paying jobs are the ones most teens are limited to because of lack of training, experience and education.

The abortion issue is still one hotly contested since Roe vs. Wade in 1973. President Clinton is a pro-choice advocate. Throughout his presidency, Bill Clinton has protected a woman’s right to choose.

If elected, Bob Dole would work to terminate legalized abortions. This would force women to return to the dark ages, when abortions were illegal and hundreds of women died from crude, back-alley abortions.

Our nation does not need to return to this era of butchery. Little good will be accomplished for either side should our nation repeal a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body.

Education is an issue that directly affects us. How to pay for college is a troubling question on many young voters’ minds.

Bob Dole is planning to entirely eliminate the Department of Education. Dole supports the downsizing of student loans and financial aid programs. Millions of students depend on government funds to finance their education. Without this help, many high school graduates will be forced to forgo their college education and directly enter the work force.

It’s true that a degree is not necessary for every profession, but the jobs that do require one need a variety of people to fill those positions - not just the elite few who can afford high tuition costs.

Bill Clinton realizes the importance of furthering your education, be it in a trade school, community college or four-year university. He’s committed to making post-secondary school dreams a reality. His Americorps plan is just one good example.

It may sound ridiculous, but age is indeed a factor in the 1996 presidential election. As a woman, minority, middle-class student, I honestly don’t think Bob Dole has a clue of what my life is like. Come on, Bob Dole was a teenager in the 1930s.

Times have changed. I realize Bob Dole has faced personal tragedies and served our country in a time of need. The GI Bill was there to help him. What is there for us?

It’s also true that both candidates have daughters - their link to the “younger generation.” But there’s one major difference: Bill Clinton’s daughter is in our generation, Bob Dole’s daughter is in our parents’.

We need a president who realizes what a significant role young people play in America, someone who will invest in us and our future.

President Clinton is willing to make that investment.
