Driver Plows Into Crowd, Killing 2

Compiled From Wire Services

A drunken driver slammed his car into a crowd gathered on a highway to watch an illegal drag race early Saturday, killing two people and injuring more than a dozen, authorities said.

At least 100 young people were standing on the Northwest Highway to watch the race at 1:30 a.m. when Paul Danitz drove over a hill and didn’t see the crowd until it was too late, police said.

Danitz, 51, of Irving, was charged with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter.

Killed were Warren Wistler, 26, and Rebecca Patton, 18. Two of the injured were in critical condition.

Authorities say that despite police patrols, people continue to gather at several spots in the area to socialize and race their cars.
