Beauty Is Truly Relative, Even When You’re 79

You see them annually, those lists of the best, brightest, the most beautiful. But one of the first magazines to do it was Ebony, that clone of Life magazine for African-Americans. Ebony began publishing its list of “The Most Beautiful Black Women” in 1946.

And one woman has made the list every single year: Lena Horne.

Horne made it again this year, despite being 79. She was joined by the following: former Miss America Vanessa Williams and actresses Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Salli Richardson and Angela Bassett; singers Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Chilli Thomas and Cassandra Wilson; model Tyra Banks; opera singer Jessye Norman; and educator Camille Cosby, wife of Bill Cosby.

Miss New York Tammy Harris, 24, is the only tattooed Miss America hopeful. The bit of body art involves ballet slippers positioned above her, uh, derriere. “I did it on a dare,” she said.

At least they weren’t tattooed on her

In a story about the reign of Miss America Shawntel Smith, who followed title-holder Heather Whitestone, the Associated Press writer wrote, “As Miss America, she had big shoes to fill.”

Heh-heh-heh, we said dinck, heh-heh-heh

By now you may know that crooner Englebert Humperdinck sings the title song for the Beavis and Butt-Head movie “Fly High Lesbian Seagull.” But maybe you don’t know why, according to his handlers, he is eminently qualified to do so. “Though many people have come to know Engelbert as the romantic leader of the free world,” says a news release, “few know of his disarming wit and charm.”
