Dollar Climbs Against Yen, Mark

The dollar hit eight-week highs against both the German mark and Japanese yen Tuesday, rising for the third consecutive session on continued expectations of an interest rate increase in the United States.

The dollar’s strength came largely from events that occurred before Tuesday.

Traders said the dollar benefited from the strong U.S. economic data released Friday, which raised prospects for higher American interest rates, something that could increase demand for U.S. assets.

The dollar also gained from comments by Germany’s chief central banker Monday in favor of a stronger dollar.
