‘Ellen’ Wedding A Laughable Affair

John Martin New York Times Syndicate

It’s Paige’s (Joely Fisher) wedding, and Ellen (Ellen DeGeneres) is the stressed-out maid of honor on “Ellen,” ABC at 8

It’s an opportunity DeGeneres makes the most of with a madcap performance that will have you doubling over in laughter.

The two-part season finale is repeated in back-to-back half-hours.

Get out your hankies - not because it’s a beautiful wedding but because you will laugh until you cry.

Highlights

‘The Metropolitan Opera Presents,” KSPS at 7: Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” portrays two lovers (Sharon Sweet, Placido Domingo) and their attempt to escape a jealous brother.

James Levine conducts the performance, which was taped in March. (In Italian with English subtitles.)

“Ghost” (1990), CBS at 8:30: The mix of romance, comedy and murder mystery made this a box-office smash. Maybe it’s time you finally watch it.

Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg star.

“Party of Five,” FOX at 9: Charlie (Matthew Fox) tries desperately to halt Kirsten’s (Paul Devicq) downward spiral into depression. Meanwhile, Bailey (Scott Wolf) moves into an apartment, which sets the stage for a critical turn in his relationship with Sarah (Jennifer Love Hewitt).

“PrimeTime Live,” ABC at 10: Thanks to modern technology, your identity can be hijacked. A two-part report shows how criminals steal big bucks by assuming the names of law-abiding citizens.

Cable Calls

“Spotlight With Phyllis George,” TNN at 5 and 9: The former beauty queen and sportscaster chats it up with “Monday Night Football” analyst Frank Gifford and actor Patrick Duffy (“Dallas,” “Step By Step”).

“Unabomber: The True Story” (1996), USA at 9: The 18-year hunt for the domestic terrorist is told mainly through the experiences of a postal inspector (Dean Stockwell) whose efforts led to the April 3, 1996, arrest of bombing suspect Ted Kaczynski (Tobin Bell). Instrumental was the assistance of Kaczynski’s brother, David (Robert Hays).

Although producers say they aimed for accuracy, they undermine their case by basing Stockwell’s character on several investigators who worked on the case. The movie was not available for review.
