Illegal Day Care Shut Down At School

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Kellogg School District has shut down a private day care operation that operated for one week at Pinehurst Elementary School.

Superintendent Larry Curry visited the business, Just for Kids, on Monday and was surprised to learn that owner Alene Yergler did not have liability insurance.

Also on Monday, the state Health and Welfare Department advised Curry that Yergler’s day care was unlicensed and thus operating illegally.

“She had a private day care here before,” Curry said on Tuesday. “I think everybody assumed she had a license.”

At a Monday school board meeting, Curry recommended that the day care be shut down. The board - whose members were displeased at not having been consulted about the business - had planned to make a decision about its continued operation that evening.

School officials say there is a need for child care at the school, especially an after-school program. Just for Kids also took care of pre-schoolers.

School board members welcomed other proposals to operate a day care at the school, Curry said.
