Bears Cut Ex-Cfl Place-Kicker Huerta

Associated Press

Place-kicker Carlos Huerta, who missed three field goals in the first three games, was cut Monday by the Chicago Bears.

Huerta, 4 of 7 on field goals in his first NFL season after coming over from the Canadian Football League, had beaten out veteran Kevin Butler for the job.

Huerta missed a 44-yard attempt Sunday in a loss to the Vikings, and coach Dave Wannstedt said after the game the kicking situation would be re-evaluated.

“I feel like my job’s in jeopardy every time I take the field,” Huerta said. “That’s just the way it is.”

The Bears will give a tryout to Jeff Jaeger, a former University of Washington kicker, who is flying to Chicago today, a team spokesman said. Jaeger was cut at the end of preseason by the Oakland Raiders.

The Atlanta Falcons signed a one-year contract with former two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Nate Odomes, one of the Seattle Seahawks’ final cuts, and waived eight-year veteran cornerback D.J. Johnson.

Twins Sean and Sam Manuel have been separated by the San Francisco 49ers. With their depth at wide receiver strained by injuries, the 49ers signed Brice Hunter to their practice squad and released Sam Manuel, a linebacker. Sean Manuel, a tight end, remains with the 49ers on their regular roster.
