Green Leaves Oregon For Tennessee Position

Compiled From Wire Services

The University of Tennessee hired Jerry Green of the University of Oregon to be its basketball coach, after at least two of the school’s top choices turned it down.

Green replaces Kevin O’Neill, who resigned March 11 to become coach at Northwestern.

Although Tennessee athletic director Doug Dickey said he was delighted to hire Green, the coach was not the school’s top candidate.

Green was formerly an assistant at the University of Kansas and coach at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Danny Fortson, the second-leading scorer in University of Cincinnati history, announced he will give up his final year of eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

Temple center Marc Jackson, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds, will give up his final year of college eligibility to enter the NBA draft.
