G-Prep Mezzo-Soprano Wins Solo Competition

Jennifer Cameron, a junior at Gonzaga Prep, won first place in the mezzo-soprano division of the Eastern Washington Music Educator’s Solo-Ensemble Festival.

Cameron advances to the state competition in Ellensburg on April 26.

She is the daughter of Cliff and Bonnie Cameron.

Capt. Anne Konesky Gosnell, a former Spokane resident, has been named assistant professor of Aerospace Studies for Air Force ROTC at the University of Minnesota.

As a support flight commander, she also recently was named Personnel Manager of the Year for Headquarters Recruiting Service.

Gosnell is a graduate of Gonzaga Prep High School and Notre Dame University. She is the daughter of Mary Alyce Konesky of Spokane and the late Richard Konesky.

Bernard Oliver, dean of the Washington State University College of Education, has been elected to the board of directors of the Holmes Partnership, America’s leading organization for teacher preparation reform.

Also, during 1997, Oliver will serve as president-elect of the Association of Colleges and Schools of Education in State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and Affiliated Private Universities. The organization consists of deans from 120 of America’s largest education colleges.

Dennis Jones, a 1964 Washington State University graduate in business administration, has been elected president of WSU’s Alumni Association.

He now lives in Fort Worth, Texas, and is a captain and pilot with Delta Air Lines.

Clara Demmer of Spokane has been elected into the National Library of Poetry’s International Poetry Hall of Fame. Her poems will be displayed in the Clara Demmer Poetry Exhibit on the Internet.

Ryan Best, son of Thomas and Susan Best of Spokane and a student at Seattle Pacific University, is included in the 1997 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American University and Colleges.”

Britton Boyd, a 1995 graduate of Ferris High School, was named on the Dean’s List at the University of Montana, where he is a sophomore. He maintained a 4.0 grade point average during fall semester.

Sean Finley and Anthony Woodard, graduates of Gonzaga Prep, have had their artwork selected for publication in the “Understanding Catholic Christianity,” a high-school textbook published by Saint Mary’s Press.

Finley is the son of Mitch and Kathy Finley; Woodard’s parents are Kathleen Woodard and Mark Woodard.

Volt Services Group of Spokane was named Employer of the Year by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest.

Other achievements and support of employers, staff, volunteers and employees included:

Larry Brown/Johnstone Supply, Business Contributor of the Year.

Nadine Van Stone, manager of Rehabilitation Services, received the Floyd Bowers Memorial Award for Outstanding Performance.

Becky Bales, Bales Construction, Liberty Lake, and Vivian Reynolds, Spokane, were named Volunteers of the Year.

Mona Bass, Coeur d’Alene, was named Employee of the Year. David French, Spokane, was a finalist for Employee of the Year.

Three students at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman were named Students of the Month for February by the Pullman Kiwanis Club.

They are: Anne Meyer, sixth grade, daughter of Doug and Kathy Meyer; Lindsay Baugh, seventh grade, daughter of Scott and Jeri Baugh; and Jack Lo, eighth grade, son of Po-Wen and Judy Lo.

Paul Orozco has been appointed Native American student counselor at Washington State University. He is a member of the Nez Perce Tribe and a graduate of Washington State University.

Three Washington State University employees were named winners of the 1997 Washington State University President’s Employee Excellence Award.

The employees, their positions and departments are:

George Ball, systems and program manager, Information Technology; Jeanne Jensen, publications coordinator, Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology, College of Veterinary Medicine; and Sharon Zentzis, human resource professional, Human Resource Services.

Air Force Airman Toby Stolz completed the munitions systems material apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Stolz is the son of George and Rita Riebe, Spokane, and a 1996 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Laura Schultz is a distinguished graduate of the financial services apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Schultz is the daughter of Nancy Ness, Veradale.

Barrett Joel Smith has been named to the Dean’s List for fall semester at Wheaton (Ill.) College, where he is majoring in music performance in piano. Dean’s List students must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett Smith.
