Hammonds Ices Game For O’S

Jeffrey Hammonds hit a two-run double with two outs in the 11th inning Wednesday night, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in snowy Kauffman Stadium at Kansas City, Mo.

In the 11th inning, Cal Ripken singled with two outs off Brian Bevil (0-1), Kansas City’s fourth pitcher. B.J. Surhoff then walked before Hammonds doubled to deep center.

Snow ranging from light to heavy fell throughout the game as temperatures dropped into the mid-30s and the wind chill plunged into the 20s.

Athletics 4, Red Sox 3 Oakland

Using a borrowed glove and fueled by peanuts he munched while sitting on a frozen airport runway, Aaron Small arrived in time to pitch Oakland to a win.

Geronimo Berroa hit his fourth homer and Scott Brosius drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded walk in the 10th.

Small (1-0), promoted from Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League earlier in the day, pitched one inning for the win.

Tigers 10, Twins 5 Detroit

Bobby Higginson hit the first grand slam of his career to lead Detroit over Minnesota before 6,477, the smallest crowd at Tiger Stadium in eight years.

Yankees 12, Angels 5 Anaheim

New York, eager to get home for the first time as world champion after an eight-game West Coast trip, scored eight runs in the third and routed Anaheim.

David Wells gave up nine hits and Mark Whiten got four hits for the Yankees.

Blue Jays 5, White Sox 0 Chicago

Roger Clemens (2-0) and three Toronto relievers allowed only three hits in the Blue Jays’ win over Chicago.

Rangers vs. Brewers, ppd Milwaukee

Temperatures that dropped below the freezing mark caused Milwaukee to postpone the game. No makeup date was set.
