Cards Outlast Ricks To Gain Split

College baseball

Ryan Novach’s home run, the fourth of the game for North Idaho College, broke a ninth-inning tie and gave the Cardinals a split of a doubleheader against Ricks College on Friday at Rexburg, Idaho.

NIC’s 15-13 victory followed a 7-6 Ricks victory in the opener.

In the nightcap, NIC’s Matt Nelson drove in five runs and made a diving catch to deny Ricks a run in the bottom of the ninth.

The Cardinals had 18 hits in the second game, but Ricks turned three bases-loaded double plays.

NIC led 13-7 before Ricks tied the game with six runs in the eighth.

In the opener, Ricks built a 7-4 lead through four innings and held off the Cardinals, who scored two runs in the sixth.

Portland St. 13, Washington St. 9

Portland State scored eight runs in the seventh inning to come from behind and defeat visiting Washington State 13-9 in a Pac-10 North Division game at Portland on Friday.

Graham Schetzsle’s triple and Rick Southall’s ninth home run each drove in two runs during the outburst.

Mark Burke had a run-scoring double in the seventh and a two-run homer in the eighth for the Vikings.

The Vikings trailed 9-2 prior to taking a 10-9 lead in the seventh to make a winner of Jesse Darling, who entered the game in the sixth.

The Cougars started Todd Meldahl on the mound and the freshman left-hander limited the Vikings to two runs and six hits through the first six innings. But five consecutive hits by the Vikings keyed the decisive rally.

Casey Kelley, Jesse Hoorelbeke and Justin Mentink homered for Washington State as the Cougars scored five runs in the first four innings and led 5-0.

After the Vikings tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, WSU collected three more runs to take an 8-2 lead at the end of six innings. Mentink and Shawn Stevenson had run-scoring singles in the inning. The Cougs then added one more run in the seventh for a 9-2 lead when Ray Hattenburg tripled then scored on Steve Curran’s single.

The victory was the first in conference play for Portland State. PSU is 1-7 in the Pac-10 and 8-29 overall. Washington State fell to 1-8 in the conference and 5-32 for the season.
