Cda, Lake City Have To Try Again

It rained so much Saturday afternoon that they could have held a fishing derby along with the baseball game at Coeur d’Alene High School.

After three rain delays, umpires charitably ended the futile efforts to play just one Inland Empire League game, let alone hopes of completing a doubleheader.

Coeur d’Alene appeared bound to win by the 10-run rule as it was. But when Lake City shortstop Griffen Rod slipped in the mud trying to field a routine slow hopper that loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, umpires stopped play permanently as the Vikings prevailed 13-4.

It took just over 3-1/2 hours to play 5-1/2 innings, and the game is official. CdA stays in second at 5-2, 9-4 overall. LC dropped to 3-3 and 6-6.

“It was a wonderful day if you’re a frog,” joked CdA coach Brian Holgate.

“It was a base on balls disaster,” summed up LC coach Cory Bridges.

The coaches and CdA athletic director Larry Schwenke tentatively agreed to complete the doubleheader Thursday at CdA as part of an originally scheduled single game at LC. The teams will play a twin bill at LC on May 1.

Trailing 4-0, CdA took advantage of LC starter Andy Potter’s wildness in the third inning.

Potter didn’t allow a hit in the first two innings. But the Viks chased the LC pitcher after six walks and two hits.

The majority of Potter’s pitches were head high, especially during three straight walks with the bases loaded. Reliever Tim Moering walked in a run against the first batter he faced and the Viks added two final runs on a routine grounder that was muffed by an infielder.

“Our pitchers have got to throw strikes - plain and simple,” Bridges said. “If Andy throws strikes he’s got a good chance to finish. He was his own worst enemy.”

LC pitchers allowed 16 walks.

CdA pitcher Casey Hoorelbeke (4-1) was solid, not allowing the delays to bother him.

CdA, which dropped both ends of a doubleheader at league favorite and defending champ Lewiston, will get a chance at redemption Tuesday when the Bengals visit for a doubleheader.

LC has a single league game at home Monday against Post Falls.
