Visitors Enjoy Trip To Lake City Lewiston, Kennewick Dominate Reiswig

It’s days like Saturday that add to this area’s reputation as a destination vacation spot.

So it’s probably appropriate that two teams that traveled roughly the same distance took home the majority of trophies and medals from the 19th annual Super-1/Bob Reiswig Memorial invitational track meet at Lake City High School.

Lewiston’s boys sprinted past Kennewick for a team title and Kennewick’s girls doubled their pleasure.

The Bengals boys posted 130 points to Kennewick’s 123. Kennewick’s girls, who captured the prestigious Pasco Invitational last weekend, won 12 of 18 events to tally 167 points and more than lapped the field. Coeur d’Alene finished runner-up with 72.

Athletes earned sunburns and worked up perspiration for the first time this spring. Although the meet was smaller than in past years because it was held on the same date as the Mooberry Relays in Spokane, it didn’t lack for quality.

Kennewick’s Beth Hanson was named the female field athlete of the meet for wins in the shot put (37 feet, 4 inches) and discus (129-11), both personal bests.

Teammate Heidi Abersfeller was named the female track athlete of the meet for victories in the 100 (12.84 seconds) and 200 (25.84).

Kennewick’s Chris Littrel earned the male track athlete of the meet honor for wins in the 110 (15.38) and 300 (40.4) hurdles.

Rick McCrery played a pivotal role in Lewiston’s victory with wins in the triple (41-9) and long jump (20-6) and was accorded the male field athlete of the meet award.

Lewiston’s boys were runaway winners in the Inland Empire League dual season and they showed Saturday why they should dominate in two weeks at the league’s state-qualifying meet.

The Bengals won three of four relays with season-best times. They set a meet record by one-tenth of a second in the 800 relay as the foursome of McCrery, Josh Wilund, Mike Rogers and Brad Rice combined for a time of 1:30.4.

That time would have captured gold at state last year.

Wilund, McCrery, Rice and Darren Mohr sprinted to a time of 44.03 to capture the 400 relay and Colin Jasper, David Six, Jason Simmons and Todd Jones took the medley in 3:46.4.

The Bengals’ 1600 crew of Six, Rogers, Simmons and Chris Reineke was nipped by one-tenth of a second at the tape by Kennewick.

“I thought our efforts in the (relays) was our best this season,” Lewiston coach Wade Hillman said. “You could tell the difference today with the warmer weather. The competition from Kennewick really pushed our kids.”

Kennewick coach Ted Homme wasn’t surprised that his girls won, but was pleased they did so in such a dominating fashion coming off a conference meet on Thursday.

“We won the Pasco Invitational so I knew we’d do well,” Homme said. “But it’s tough to come up here after a day’s rest. If we can stay healthy, we think we can fare well at state.”

A handful of other North Idaho athletes captured first-place medals.

Caleb Bowman of Sandpoint took the 200 in a time of 22.6 and Mike Keith of Lake City prevailed in the 800 (2:01.3).

Area winners among girls included Brenda Nipp of Coeur d’Alene in the 400 (1:00.8), Meghan Collins of Sandpoint in the 300 hurdles (47.75) and Shasta Cornett of Post Falls in the pole vault (9-0).

Priest River Invitational

Domination in the running events led St. Maries to the boys title at the 13-team event.

Rob Desaussure won the 100 (11.67), 200 (23.66) and placed second in the 400 (52.69) for the Lumberjacks. Jeremy Badgett of St. Maries added wins in the 800 (2:05) and 1,600 (4:57). The Lumberjacks scored 96, seven more than Lakeland.

However, there may have been a scoring error in the boys long jump, in which case Lakeland would have enough points (99) to be the boys champion. The Spokesman-Review was unable to reach Priest River coach Bruce Blaser to check the possible error.

Other boys double winners were Chris Carlson, Wallace, both hurdles; Jason Frank, Kellogg, discus and shot put; and Paul Kowalczyk, Lakeland, long jump and triple jump.

Lakeland’s girls scored 103 to the 92 of runner-up St. Maries at the 14-team event. Sarah DeBoer led the Hawks with wins in both hurdles (17.08 and 50.53) and high jump (5-2).

Missy Ennis of the host Spartans won the 100 and 200, while Aree Stone of St. Maries took the 1,600 and 3,200.
