How ‘Bout Pink Flamingos?

It’s just too different, officials in Coral Gables, Fla., say, labeling Donald Epstein’s grinning alligator mailbox illegal. Neighborhood kids love to touch the 5-foot, papier-mache critter, and many of Epstein’s neighbors think the city needs a sense of humor. But someone did complain, leading the city inspector to take a look at it. He pointed out that the city code says, “Mailbox designs should be consistent throughout the development.” Epstein, 64, a retiree from Chicago, said he just wanted to express his individuality. He’ll have a chance to argue his case before city officials next month.
