From Staff And Wire Reports

Women’s college basketball

Less than 24 hours after the most humiliating defeat in school history, Eastern Washington University unleashed one of its finest comebacks to defeat Iona 50-48 in the consolation game of the Santa Clara Diet Pepsi Tournament at Santa Clara, Calif.

Trailing 35-12 after the first 90 seconds of the second half, the Eagles scored 38 of the final 51 points and gave new head coach Jocelyn Pfeifer her first victory after three defeats.

Forward Juli Carlson scored 18 of her 23 points after the intermission and Courtney Horner produced the game-winner by sinking a layup with 1 second left on the clock. Carlson also pulled down 11 rebounds.

Dreadful second-half shooting doomed the Vandals (1-5) and allowed the Phoenix (4-1) to overcome a 34-27 halftime deficit in the consolation bracket of the Wahine Classic at Honolulu.

Idaho made only 5 of 27 field-goal attempts in the second half. Green Bay, led by Chari Nordgaard’s 29 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, shot 13 for 23 in the final 20 minutes.

Kelli Johnson scored 14 points for Idaho.

Erin Dowhy’s layup with 6 seconds left in regulation tied the game and the Cardinals dominated the Sasquatch in the overtime period to win the Bellevue Thanksgiving Classic at Bellevue, Wash.

Dowhy, who finished with 19 points, and teammate Tammy Goyne, named most valuable player, made the all-tournament team for NIC.

Shelley Massingale, who led the Sasquatch with 20 points, and Lisa Bocook represented CCS.

Washington 63, (20) Iowa 62

At Iowa City, Iowa, Jamie Redd scored 20 points and hit a sensational fall-away shot with 19.3 seconds left for the clinching basket as the Huskies (3-0) defeated the Hawkeyes (2-3) to win the Prairie Lights Classic.

Washington built 11-point leads in each half, then held on behind Redd and tournament MVP Amber Hall to hand Iowa, playing with only eight healthy scholarship players, its third loss in four games.

Redd twice hit jump shots after Iowa cut the lead to one point late.

(8) Illinois 77, (15) Duke 65

At San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tauja Catchings and Ashely Berggren scored 17 points apiece to lead the Fighting Illini (3-1) over the Blue Devils (4-1) for the championship of the San Juan Shootout.
