Lake City Maintains Its Advantage Over Rival

Prep basketball

Several factors contributed to the Lake City High girls basketball team’s eighth straight victory over its cross-town rival Thursday.

None more so, though, than shooting.

The top-ranked Timberwolves more than doubled visiting Coeur d’Alene’s field-goal percentage as Lake City was too much for the young Vikings, 53-27, in the first Border League game between the teams.

LC (5-0 overall, 2-0 in league) shot better than 50 percent in three quarters as the T-Wolves made 23 of 44 attempts (52 percent). CdA (1-4), playing its league opener, finished 10 of 47 (21 percent).

And the Viks needed a 4-of-16 effort in their best period, the fourth quarter, to finish with a double-digit total for made baskets.

Using good passing in its halfcourt offense, LC pulled away early to an 18-5 lead before CdA managed its second basket with 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

A jumper by Kelley McCabe extended the T-Wolves’ lead to 25-7 at the 4:51 mark of the second period. CdA didn’t score its first basket in the quarter until Krissi Ruiz sank a 5-footer on the baseline with 4 minutes left.

Katelyn Tatum lifted CdA out of single digits with a basket in the key with 27 seconds remaining before halftime. McCabe answered with a basket in the post to widen LC’s lead to 31-11 at halftime.

LC made 15 of 27 shots from the field in the first half to CdA’s 4 of 22.

Even though it struggled, CdA threatened to keep the margin near 20 points through 2-1/2 quarters. But the Viks, winless against their rivals, lost touch midway through the third quarter when the T-Wolves closed out the period with an 11-3 spurt.

A free throw by Lindsay Herbert gave LC its biggest lead at 46-17 with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter.

Seven of nine T-Wolves score four points or more. Herbert led with 15, including two 3-pointers, and 6-foot-4 senior post Alison Asher added 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.
