Cornhuskers Suspend Drum For Misdemeanor Assault

Brandon Drum was suspended from Nebraska’s football team following a racially charged fight in which he broke a man’s nose at a bar in Lincoln, Neb.

The reserve defensive tackle, who is white, was ticketed early Friday for third-degree misdemeanor assault after reportedly head-butting a black patron of Guitars and Cadillacs bar. He also is accused of making racial slurs during what witnesses said was an unprovoked attack.

Drum is set to appear in Lancaster County Court on Jan. 15.

Athletic director Bill Byrne did not disclose the length of the suspension. But he said the 21-year-old redshirt sophomore apparently violated team rules regarding drinking and appropriate conduct.

Two LSU football players were injured in a car crash early Sunday when the driver fell asleep and the car veered off a highway in Mansfield, La., and hit a tree, state police said.

Melvin Hill, a senior fullback, received severe lacerations to his face and upper body. Samuel Scott, a walk-on, broke a leg.

“Without a doubt, the only reason they’re both alive is because they were wearing their seat belts,” said Lt. Mike Edmonson.

LSU plays Notre Dame in the Independence Bowl next Sunday and it is not known whether Hill will be able to play.
