Vandals Lose To Tigers

From Staff And Wire Reports

Guard Harry Allen scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds Monday night in leading Memphis to a 72-58 non-league men’s basketball victory over Idaho.

Idaho (5-4) trailed by only 54-51 on Eddie Hampton’s 15-foot jumper with 7:50 remaining.

But Memphis (5-3) scored the next seven points on a 3-point play and another driving basket by Omar Sneed and an inside basket from Jermaine Ousley for a 61-51 lead with 3:42 left.

“Overall, the kids’ effort certainly was good enough,” said Idaho coach Dave Farrar. “We just need to execute better. We didn’t play well or execute well enough offensively. “There were times we had some good moments offensively, but we turned the ball over way too much.”

Memphis held a 40-33 lead at the half.

Both teams shot the ball well from the field - Memphis hitting 50.9 percent while the Vandals connected on 47.1 percent. The teams were about equal in turnovers, but Memphis controlled the boards, outrebounding Idaho 37-25.

Farrar said the Vandals can take some lessons home that will help them as they head into a rigorous three-game week that starts next Tuesday against Gonzaga and concludes with Big West Conference games against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.

“We made them play pretty ugly at times,” Farrar said.
