Too Much Time On Top For Sugar And Spice Girls

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

This past year certainly wasn’t a highlight in the meteoric career of Britain’s Spice Girls.

They fired their manager. They started getting bad reviews. They got booed off the stage at a Spanish awards show. And, despite the fact that their single “Too Much” was their second straight Christmas-time No. 1 hit, their CD wasn’t selling in near as heavy a volume as expected.

So maybe that’s why the quintet showed up on the cover of Vogue magazine Gucci-clad instead of wearing their regular freak-show/ sex-circus-clown costumes?

They insist it’s not so. “We’re not pretending to be cool,” said Posh Spice. “We’re not claiming to be fantastic soul divas. We’re just saying, ‘We’re happy with it. If you like it, then jump on our vibe.’ We know it could all end tomorrow.”

Loose talk

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards on Prince Charles (in Total TV): “A generation skipped him. But he acts like a royal rock ‘n’ roller behind the scenes.”

And who is he? Well, Guess Who

Burton Cummings turns 50 today.

Didn’t she used to be on television or something?

Pamela Anderson Lee gave birth to her second child, a 6-pound, 14-ounce boy named Dylan Jagger. Lee, attended by two midwives and her husband, Motley Crue rocker Tommy Lee, gave birth at home.

Her career sure slowed, but it never really foundered

You may not have heard of her, but Gloria Stuart, the 87-year-old actress who played the elder Rose Stuart in James Cameron’s film “Titanic,” has appeared in 46 films during her long screen career. The actress, who played the 101-year-old version of Kate Winslet, also founded the Screen Actors Guild in 1933.

Hey, if he’s paying millions, we’ll consider it, too

Unlike his native country, which prefers to think of him in terms traditionally applied to extraterrestrials, Michael Jackson is front-page news in Britain. The British tabloids recently ran a rash of stories involving his alleged attempt to have a child by ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley. Both the Express and the Star quoted Jackson as saying, “Lisa Marie wants to have my baby and I’m very proud and honored.”

Maybe they should open it in time for Halloween VI

Another sign of the coming apocalypse: The fourth installment of the “Lethal Weapon” series begins shooting Jan. 8. Stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover and Joe Pesci return. Their adversary: Hong Kong star Jet Li.

Bitingly witty and clever, maybe, but never funny

Being named one of the “50 Funniest People Alive” by Entertainment Weekly took Janeane Garofalo by surprise. “I know what a hack is and I laugh at all the right things,” she said. “But you’d never characterize me as a ‘funny person.”’
