Fatal Mistake Kept Cold Air Pouring In

A home thermostat switched to air conditioning dropped temperatures into the teens, leading to the death of an elderly man. His wife was hospitalized Friday for hypothermia.

Robert and Phyllis Heppner, both 73, were found Wednesday.

The thermostat was set to activate the air conditioning instead of the furnace. Authorities didn’t know who set the switch.
