Nearing Plays Starring Role In Cardinals’ Overtime Win

Jana Nearing scored 15 points Saturday night, including the two that tied the game at the end of regulation play, and North Idaho College went on to edge College of Southern Idaho 74-69 in a Scenic West Conference women’s basketball thriller.

NIC (21-2. 11-2 in the Scenic West) also got 15 points from Angie Dickson and 10 from freshman center Erin Dowhy, who was making only the second start of her career.

CSI (18-6, 7-5) led by two points and had the ball with 10 seconds left in regulation. But the Golden Eagles were called for an over-and-back violation at half court and Nearing scored on a backdoor pass from Jaime Richards to force the overtime.

The Cardinals grabbed the lead at the stat of the extra period on a 3-pointer by Tammy Goyne and never trailed again.

CSI was paced offensively by Casy Murdock’s 17 points.

Whitworth 62, George Fox 53

The Pirates improved their chances of earning a spot in the Northwest Conference’s select postseason tournament by slipping past visiting George Fox University 62-53 Saturday night.

The win was the Pirates’ fifth straight and moved them into a fourth-place tie with George Fox in the NCIC standings. Both teams are 7-5 in league after splitting the season series. The Pirates lost in Newberg, Ore., 67-62 last month.

In Saturday’s game at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, the teams played to 12 lead changes and eight ties, including a 26-26 halftime score.

Whitworth’s Andrea Sherer broke the final tie when she hit a jump shot to give the Pirates a 53-51 lead with 4:42 left in the game.

The Pirates (11-9 overall) never trailed after that and the Bruins (11-8) only scored two points in the final 7 minutes, 56 seconds.

Whitworth guard Jen Tissue, who leads NAIA Division II in free-throw shooting (49 of 55 for 89 percent) went to the line twice in the final minute and converted all four shots to finish with 19 points.

Bucs center Sherri Northington finished with a double-double - 12 points and 10 rebounds. George Fox center Angela Pettit scored 21 points, 11 in the opening 8 minutes of the second half.

Portland 88, Gonzaga 67

Deana Lansing and Wendy Tooten combined for 37 points and the Pilots’ relentless defense helped force 29 turnovers in a West Coast Conference romp past the visiting Bulldogs.

Portland (21-1, 10-0) sprinted to a 10-4 lead and built its advantage to 45-31 at halftime. Lansing finished with 19 points and 12 assists. Tooten added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

GU (4-18, 2-8) got 18 points from reserve Chelsea Herman and had three other players score in double figures. But the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome their ball-handling mistakes.

“Portland does a good job of defending the passing lanes, and they use a lot of pressure,” GU coach Kellee Barney said, “but some of our turnovers were on unforced errors that were just ridiculous.”

Shelly Massingale scored 15 points and teammates Alana Carlander and Heather Brandt each added 12 as the Sasquatch rallied from a 28-24 halftime deficit to beat visiting Blue Mountain.

Community Colleges of Spokane (18-8, 6-4 in NWACC) shot only 34 percent in the first half, but warmed up considerably and made 15 of 30 second-half shots.

Oregon 62, WSU 52

The Ducks’ Arianne Boyer scored a game-high 19 points and plucked down 12 rebounds in a Pac-10 win over the Cougars at Friel Court in Pullman.

Amy Saneholz scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for WSU (8-12, 2-9) and teammate Yvonne Kunze added 10 points and seven boards. But it wasn’t enough to hold off Oregon (15-5, 8-3), which also picked up 14 points from Lisa Bowyer - 11 of which came from the free-throw line.

Renae Fegent added 10 points and grabbed seven boards for the Ducks.

The Ducks made 21 of 34 free throws, prompting WSU coach Harold Rhodes to say, “I thought we did a good job of controlling the things we could control tonight.

“But there is nothing you can do when they shoot twice as many free throws as you.”

The Cougars made 11 of just 17 free throws.

Jamie Redd scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as the Huskies (11-9 overall, 6-5 Pac-10) maintained their early lead and beat the visiting Beavers (10-10, 4-7) in Seattle.

OSU’s Nicole McAllister hit a 3-pointer with 22.4 seconds left to close within three, but the Huskies converted several free throws to secure the win.
