India Official Asked To Resign

Compiled From Wire Services

A top Indian intelligence officer was asked to resign after holding unauthorized meetings with U.S. diplomats, including the deputy CIA station chief in India, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The allegations against Rattan Sehgal, former counterintelligence chief for India’s Intelligence Bureau, are “a serious matter” that require more investigation, Home Minister Indrajit Gupta told The Indian Express.

Gupta’s was the first public statement since another paper reported last week that two U.S. diplomats may be asked to leave India because of their contacts with Sehgal.

The U.S. Embassy has refused to comment beyond saying that the issue is “an internal Indian government matter.”

The two diplomats have not been identified, but newspaper reports have said one was either the CIA station chief or deputy station chief.
