Shadow Open Usisl Tourney

The Spokane Shadow will be looking for its fifth consecutive win this season against the Bellingham Orcas when the teams meet Saturday at Albi Stadium in the first game of the USISL Premier League Northwest Division soccer tournament.

The Shadow face the Orcas at 6 p.m. In the second game at 8 p.m., the Yakima Reds meet the Cascade Surge.

Saturday’s winners play at 6 p.m. Sunday at Albi. The tournament champion meets the winner of the Southwest Division tournament on Aug. 2 in a one-game playoff for a berth in the national tournament.

Spokane went 14-2 in league play for 42 points, losing once against Cascade in Salem, Ore., and once in Yakima. Three of the games against the Orcas were one-goal decisions.

Tickets are on sale through Select-A-Seat or at the gate.

A three-game, two-day pass is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students with ID. Single-day tickets are $8 and $6.

Cannons win Legion opener

A five-run fifth inning that included an Aaron Gilliland three-run homer and a Ben Miller two-run homer helped propel the Cannons to a 9-8 win over the Bandits in the opening round of the best-of-3 AAA American League playoffs Wednesday.

Game 2 and Game 3, if necessary, will be played today at Jackson Field starting at 6 p.m.

Gilliland added to his totals with an RBI groundout in the seventh to provide the eventual winning margin. Josh Sheffield almost brought the Bandits back, providing a two-run homer in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh. Following the slam, Nate Bartlett closed the door on the Bandits by getting the next three batters out and earning the save.

Sean O’Conner’s three-run double in the seventh gave the Royals a 12-11 win over the Blue Devils, knotting the best-of-3 series at 1-1.

Earlier in the evening, the Blue Devils used a 10-run second inning and a complete game on the mound from Eric Hayden to defeat the Royals 11-3 in five innings.

Game 3 will start at 6 p.m. Friday at Gonzaga.

O’Conner went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a single and five RBIs as the Royals came back from a 9-0 deficit in the nightcap. Matt Caston picked up the win in relief.

In the opener, Abe Nisbet and Ryan Corigliano both hit home runs for the Blue Devils and Hayden bolstered his cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

In the AA American Legion playoffs, the Panorama Twins eliminated B & C Tel Dix 9-1 and Spokane Athletic Supply ousted Eagle Hardware 13-3.

The Twins will play PAC of Clarkston at 6 p.m. today and Spokane Athletic Supply faces Hess/Wheeler at 8 p.m. Both games will be at Central Valley High School.

CdA golfer leads WJGA

Several Inland Northwest golfers were near the top of their respective divisions Wednesday after the first day of the three-day Washington Junior Golf Association championships.

Dan Potter of Coeur d’Alene shot a 71 to lead the boys 15-17 division at Sand Point CC in Seattle. Brian Fong of Spokane shot a 73.

Patricia Bassett of Spokane was in third place at 76 in the girls 15-17 division, three strokes back of two co-leaders at Glendale CC in Bellevue.

Tyler Kempster of Lewiston (80) and David Fern of Spokane (81) were the top area golfers in the 12-14 boys division played at Glendale CC, with the leader at 73. Lani Elston of Spokane was in third place in the 12-14 girls division with an 82 at Glendale, four strokes back.

Craig Leslie of Spokane is in second place with a 76, three strokes back of the leader, in boys 8-11 at Tam O’Shanter CC at Bellevue.

The fields will be cut after today’s second round.

Hybl medalist at U.S. Junior Am

At Newtown Square, Pa., Ryan Hybl, of Hazelhurst, Ga., shot a 1-under-par 69 to win medalist honors by two strokes at the 50th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Aronimink Golf Club.

Sixty-four players advanced to today’s opening round of match play, with the cut coming at 14-over 154.

Spokane’s Reid Hatley (80-81-161) and Royal Stumph (82-82-164) failed to qualify for match play.

Holt fourth in Oregon

Spokane’s Britney Holt shot a 1-under-par 70 to rebound from Tuesday’s round of 79 and move into a tie for fourth place after the second round of the Polo Golf Junior at Langdon Farms in Aurora, Ore.

Kelli Kamimura of Burlington, Wash., has an eight-stroke lead after shooting a 68. Kamimura shot a 69 Tuesday.
