Galarraga On Tear In Rockies’ Romp

Andres Galarraga hit two homers and drove in five runs, giving him a major league-leading 101 RBIs, as the Colorado Rockies beat the Montreal Expos 12-6 Wednesday in Denver.

Galarraga, who struck out in all four of his at-bats Tuesday, went 3 for 4 with a walk. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot, his 28th, in the eighth.

Mets 5, Giants 2 San Francisco

Carl Everett’s two-run single capped a three-run eighth as New York rallied to defeat San Francisco and cut the Giants’ lead in the N.L. West to a halfgame.

Rick Reed (9-4), who won his fifth straight decision, allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings as the Mets broke a three-game losing streak. John Franco pitched a perfect ninth for his 28th save in 32 opportunities.

Astros 7, Cardinals 4 Houston

Craig Biggio hit a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning and Darryl Kile won his eighth straight decision as Houston beat St. Louis.

The N.L. Central-leading Astros are seven games ahead of St. Louis.

Houston finished 9-3 against the Cardinals after going only 2-11 against them last year.

Marlins 6, Reds 0 Miami

Unbeaten rookie Livan Hernandez allowed three hits in eight innings for his fifth win, leading Florida past Cincinnati.

Hernandez, 22, became the first Florida pitcher to start a season 5-0. Dennis Cook pitched the ninth and gave up a hit.

Braves 6, Cubs 5 Atlanta

Atlanta rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, handing Chicago its seventh consecutive loss when Fred McGriff drove in Chipper Jones.

Clearing the bases

Tom Glavine, hampered by a sore right Achilles tendon, will skip his scheduled start today when the Atlanta Braves open a four-game series against the Florida Marlins… . J.D.Drew, the Philadelphia Phillies’ top pick in the amateur draft, lost his bid to become a free agent. He had argued that the club failed to send him a contract within the required 15 days, but Major League Baseball’s executive council rejected the petition.
