Nicklaus Plays His First Round On Anaconda Course

Associated Press

About 3,000 people watched Wednesday as Jack Nicklaus played for the first time the golf course he designed to cap a Superfund site.

Nicklaus shot a 2-under-par 70 from the championship tees of the 7,075-yard Old Works Golf Course, two strokes better than any other known score from the same tees since the facility opened in late May.

After the round, Nicklaus said he was pleased with the way the course evolved and played.

Nicklaus said he became involved in the project because it made sense.

“I saw a beautiful valley for a golf course,” he said. “Nobody likes to play on an ugly golf course. People want to go out on a beautiful day to a beautiful course and have recreation. To me, the black slag piles were beautiful because they were something I could use (as material for sand traps). It’s a great setting.”
