Compiled From Wire Services

Paris Gustavo Kuerten broke into the top 20 in the ATP world tennis rankings for the first time, powered by his victory in the French Open.

The 20-year-old Brazilian, who beat two-time champion Sergi Bruguera in Sunday’s final to become the first unseeded winner since Mats Wilander in 1982, is ranked No. 15, a jump of 51 places.

Kuerten is the first Brazilian to win a Grand Slam title and the first to be ranked in the world’s top 20.

Bruguera, who began the year ranked No. 81, returns to the top 10 for the first time since November 1995, climbing 11 places to eighth position.

American Pete Sampras, who went out in the third round in Paris, maintains his lead at the top of the rankings with 4,699 points.

Michael Chang is second with 3,727, while Goran Ivanisevic climbed one place to third with 2,803.
