Lords Of Chaos Member To Implicate Pals

Associated Press

A teen accused of identifying his high school band leader so a friend could gun the man down on his doorstep pleaded guilty to murder Friday and agreed to testify against two co-defendants.

Derek Shields, 19, entered the plea days before he was to go to trial and two days after a fourth co-defendant agreed to testify against him.

Shields agreed to testify against Kevin Foster and Christopher Black, both 19. Shields will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The teenagers were members of the Lords of Chaos, a teen militia that police say started with vandalism and arson, then escalated to armed robbery and the shotgun slaying last year of Riverdale High School band leader Mark Schwebes, 32.

Two other teens reached plea agreements last year.

“The goal is to get all of them convicted,” Assistant State Attorney Randy McGruther said Friday.

Schwebes was killed hours after leaving an ice cream social at the school in April 1996 when he ran into two teens carrying cans of peaches to throw through the auditorium window, police said.

He sent them home and told them to expect a visit from the school deputy the next day, not realizing they were members of a gang in the midst of an arson spree with plans to burn down the school that night, according to police.

Police say Shields knocked on Schwebes’ door and identified the band leader for another gang member, who shot the teacher.

Police said the teens also admitted planning the “ultimate crime of chaos” for their Grad Night party at Walt Disney World, where they planned to mug Disney characters for their costumes and shoot black tourists.
