Jacques Villeneuve’s teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, stole the spotlight in practice for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Villeneuve is from Quebec and the race will be run on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, named after his late father. Villeneuve delighted the fans when he turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 20.979 seconds, relegating two-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher to second place at 1:21.201.

But the Austrian Frentzen put his Williams-Renault on top with a lap of 1:20.289 in the final 15 seconds of the session.

Dale Jarrett won the pole for Sunday’s Miller 400 at Michigan Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.

Jarrett secured his second pole of the season and fifth of his career with a speed of 183.669 mph. He joined fellow Ford driver Mark Martin as the only multiple pole-sitters this season.

Spokane’s Chad Little will start in the 23rd position.

The U.S. Auto Club denied protests filed by A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Team Menard, reaffirming its decision to declare Arie Luyendyk the winner of last week’s True Value 500 Indy-car race.

In the decision, USAC referred to its rule that a race is considered complete when the checkered flag is displayed. Both teams have until 2 p.m. EST Wednesday to appeal the ruling.
