Baby Born In Copter On Way To Hospital

Compiled From Wire Services

Raven McDonald entered the world appropriately for someone with a bird’s name: 1,500 feet over northwestern Pennsylvania, giving new meaning to the word “airborne.”

Raven’s 22-year-old mother, Rebecca Collier of Corry, went into labor two months early Thursday night and her doctor decided to send her via helicopter to a better-equipped hospital in Erie.

The baby was ready to disembark three minutes into the 13-minute flight.

“We had presentation of the head and full delivery of the infant within a matter of seconds,” said flight medic Don Millar.

Raven, 4 pounds, 7 ounces, was in intensive care Friday. Collier was in satisfactory condition.

As it happens, her full name - Raven Michelle McDonald - had nothing to do with the flight. Her parents had already picked it out.
